With just sheets of paper, a pair of scissors and projections of light, what kind of magic can unfold?In the thematic exhibition “Beyond the Ordinary – Contemporary Book Art”, paper artist Lau Ming-hang uses meticulous craftsmanship to create a three-dimensional paper installation. Under refracted light, the shadows cast by the paper sculptures gently sway and shift, drawing many visitors to linger and watch.This August, Lau will lead two workshops for both families and teenagers, inviting participants to create their own 3D paper sculptures. He will also share his creative approach to working with light, shadow and paper, as well as the inspiration and process behind his exhibited works.In the workshops, participants will explore the qualities of paper and learn how to transform a simple sheet of white paper into a three-dimensional sculpture through cutting and structural design. They will also discover how paper art, accompanied with light, can illuminate the everyday spaces around them! ⤵ About the InstructorLau Ming-hang is a creator of pop-up book story theatres, a paper art artist and an experienced theatre lighting designer. For over two decades, he has created numerous pop-up book story theatres, blending pop-up paper art and the aesthetics of theatre performance.In 2024, Lau won the Best Lighting Design award at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s production of Moscow Express. In 2019 and 2023, he curated the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (Hong Kong Pavillion) and organised exhibition events in Prague.
