Talk
Revisiting the 1970s Movable Type Printing Shop

18 Jul, 2026

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

We are honoured to welcome veteran letterpress printer Mr Lee Hoi-ning, who will share stories from his days running the shop through his rare Cathay Pacific numbering machine collection from the 1980s and 1990s, and recreate his former workplace through the talk and a live typesetting demonstration!

Drawing on his experience, Mr Lee will break down the letterpress process step by step. He will also demonstrate typesetting, offering a close-up look at the craftsmanship of letterpress printing and the distinctive atmosphere of a print shop.

What is a "numbering machine" used for in the printing process? What makes Mr Lee’s Cathay Pacific numbering machines special? Sign up to hear him explain in person!

Mr Lee Hoi-ning entered the movable type printing industry in 1959 and ran Tower Printing Company in the Central and Sheung Wan district for more than 30 years. Within just a few hundred square feet, his shop handled the four main processes of letterpress printing (typesetting, printing, trimming and binding) and took on orders from many companies and foreign trading houses.
