Karin Weber Gallery is excited to announce details of our upcoming group exhibition ‘Kaleidoscope of Abstraction’, a showcase of international artists with global reach and a singular commitment to abstraction as their means of visual expression. We are especially proud to welcome the return of two longstanding gallery artists, Udo Nöger from Germany/USA and Tomoaki Tarutani from Japan.

Disengaging from the portrayal of specific subjects can be highly liberating for artists, providing greater creative autonomy to strengthen their dialogue with a chosen medium, process, colour or texture.  

At the heart of abstract compositions is often an intensely physical process. Ripping and tearing creates Angela Glajcar’s paper ‘Terforations’ and ‘Paperwalls’ while layering and scraping creates the complex light depictions in Udo Nögers canvases. Tina Buchholtz uses a palette knife to apply, remove and reapply layers of pigment, metal and glass particles, which are then ‘weathered’by exposure to the elements outdoors. Willi Siber solders steel, cuts and carves wood to then coat his pieces in the glossiest of industrial varnishes in unique juxtapositions of the natural and the industrial.

Works which make colour explorations their main focus offer a contrast to the stern monochromes of Udo Nöger and Angela Glajcar. Works by Tomoaki Tarutani are from his ‘Grains’ Series, detailed drawings of small circles and colored surfaces, resembling cells which  fuse into organic structures and a riotous explosion of flat colours. Willi Siber commands an entire rainbow of varnishes, epoxys and lacquers for his pure colour creations while Tina Buchholtz veers between textured monochromes to vibrant bursts of colour and energy. 

As these artists demonstrate, reducing the need to engage with a subject creates immense freedom to engage with alternative aspects of artistic practice. A microcosm of top abstractionists is on show in ‘Kaleidoscope of Abstraction’ at Karin Weber Gallery.

About the Artists:

Tina Buchholtz (b. 1963, Germany) initially pursued a career in graphic design before fully committing to her own artistic practice. Recent shows and fairs include the Galerie Art Center Berlin, Germany, Museum Villa Rot, Burgrieden. Germany. Tina Buchholtz’ works can be found in private and public collections worldwide, including the German Parliament collections in Berlin, SAP AG in Walldorf, Germany and the Andre Heller Collection in Austria.  

Angela Glajcar (b. 1970, Germany) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, Germany as a master student of British sculpture artist Tim Scott (b. 1937). Initially engaged with wood and steel, Glajcar embraced paper as her medium of choice, fascinated by its complexities and inherent juxtapositions. Monumental in-situ installations can be found at the Powerlong Museum, Shanghai, China, Museum Wiesbaden, Germany and the Museion Bolzano, Italy, as well as international private and public collections. Glajcar is currently showing at the Kunstraum Dornbirn Museum in Austria and a brand new Catalogue Raisonné is about to launch in October 2024. 

Udo Nöger (b.1961, Germany) lives and works primarily in the USA. His passion for depicting light is inspired by time spent in Hawaii, California and Florida. Noegers art has truly international reach with group and solo exhibitions plus art fairs spanning key art hubs in in Europe and North America. Public collections include The Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, USA, as well as numerous German regional museums. Corporate collections include Microsoft, UBS, Deutsche Bank and Nixdorf. 

Willi Siber (b.1949, Germany) obtained his art degree from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart in 1974. Exhibiting internationally since 1990, Siber has an impressive career record of exhibitions with galleries, museums and art fairs across Europe, America and Asia. His art objects can be found in prestigious public and private collections across the globe including the German Bundestag in Berlin, Municipal Art Museums in Germany and various German Embassies. Willi Siber is also a regular at prestigious international art fairs such as Art Cologne and Art Karlsruhe in Germany, Art Central in Hong Kong, Art Taipei, Taiwan, Art Miami, The Salon Art + Design New York, USA, Collect London and London Art Fair, UK, Arco Madrid, Spain and Artissima Turin, Italy. 

Tomoaki Tarutani (b.1984, Japan) was born and raised in the countryside of Kyoto and studied textile design and traditional dyeing & weaving at Osaka University of Arts. He received additional training by a traditional Japanese metal craftsman in Kyoto. Recent exhibitions include  ASAI Hotel in Kyoto, Japan (2023), Maizuru City Hall in Kyoto, Japan (2022). His works are in the collection of Pigozzi Collection, ASAI Hotel Kyoto, Japan and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. His first collaboration with our gallery dates back to 2011.
